Episode 2. Viking Russia
Russia: it evokes images of imperial czars, the Kremlin, onion-domed churches, vast wilderness, the former global HQ of communism, and now, two of the most wildly expensive cities in the world.
Cruise travelers on Viking River Cruise Line’s “Waterways of the Czars” cruise get a taste of all these facets of Russian history and modern life.
You might not even think of Russia as a cruise destination. Several ocean or coastal cruises include St. Petersburg as a port of call, but cruising the Volga–Baltic Waterway between Moscow and St. Petersburg lets visitors experience both of Russia’s most fabled cities, AND the incredible countryside with towns and villages between, something most tourists never get to see.
Our cruise was even more special. We sailed mid-summer, during Russia’s famous ‘White Nights’, when the sun barely sets in Russia’s northern skies. Sunsets that lasted hours were irresistible to our camera operators, and they’ll make your photography look professional, too!
